2017 · A Year in Review

One Part Strategy. One Part Design.
— B&M Design Co

2017 Recap

2017 was a HUGE year for us. We started our boutique design studio, Brock and Mishler Design Co.

We had always dreamed of owning our own business, but Casey wasn’t interested in managing the business aspect and I needed a business partner who could create. I guess you can say we were the perfect match.

One part STRATEGY. One part DESIGN.

When this vision started, we were both working full-time. So you can imagine the drive, dedication, focus and organizational skill we needed to work full-time and run a side hustle. In the beginning, we didn’t see that this would be a problem, but as the year went on we realized how difficult it is to work full-time, be with our families, and be entrepreneurs. We had to figure out a way to solve this! SHH: We share what we do at the end of our post.

A YEAR IN REVIEW

We officially launched in May 2017. Over the last 7 months, we worked on a few brand & visual identities for a creative entrepreneur and a small business owner. With these being our first few clients, we had many tweaks in our client process. But hey, that’s a good thing, right? Always learning and growing. So with the tweaks, we found our process may take a bit longer than expected.

No worries. We decided to adjust the process again for our future clients. Are you still trying to find your ideal client? Don’t worry. In this new year, make it a point to focus on drilling down to find your specific client you want to service. If done right, this will be a major win for your business.

So with lots of tweaks, adjustments and trial and error over the last year, we have made it a point to set some new goals to really get us focused and ready to take on our new clients. Feel free to steal 1, 2 or all 4 of them! BUT don’t set too many goals and overwhelm yourself. The following statistic could be you if you stretch yourself too thin. DON’T be that statistic.

2018 GOAL #1: Fight Through Laziness

The Winter is prime for cozying up, reading a book, napping, watching Netflix or whatever you do with your time when it’s cold. However, this quickly can turn into laziness. So, this year we have set a goal to fight laziness. Not only in the Winter months, but also when it seems easier to be lazy on a Friday night verses cracking down on work and finishing earlier rather than later. When we first focus on fighting laziness we begin to conquer our new year goals.

2018 GOAL #2: Seek Community Over Competition

When we first launched our business, we focused on us and didn’t seek community. We wanted clients, we wanted the best social media posts and wanted to write well crafted blog posts. Okay, anyone would want to do these things, but we were missing community. We initially didn’t have a support system, other designers or bloggers encouraging us, giving us advice and talking about our design projects.

So, a few months ago, we shifted our mindsets to seek community over competition. This thought and lifestyle came together by The Rising Tide Society.  There hope is “to cultivate a society of creative entrepreneurs who believe in community over competition and have a desire to lead with love.” We LOVE this idea, and have begun to embody it. We sought out Facebook support groups to really get on board. This has been super helpful! If you’re needing support, we LOVE this group or this one.

2018 GOAL #3: Fight Comparison.

We’ve talked about this topic a bit in our Rooted in Thankfulness post, but as a business owner we can find ourselves comparing our work to other design studios. So, as we begin the new year we are focusing on the fact that each small business has its own unique expertise and design style. Many business owners will have fantastic social media posts, gorgeous client work and SEO rich blog posts, but we want to focus on the fact that we do too. Maybe there is potential this year to put the saying “Community over Competition” into practice and collaborate with a designer. Who knows, there are many possibilities that may come into play this year!

2018 GOAL #4: Establish Healthy & Successful Habits

In establishing our last goal, we came across the blog Project Hott Mess, and we adored their advice for 11 Habits of a Successful Women. So, we have take their eleven steps and turned them into our last goal for the year!

1 – Make Time For Ourselves.

Even with tons of projects, blogs to write and social media to stay on top of, we HAVE to make time for ourselves. If we don’t, we will neglect all aspects of our design studio. Do you have something you can use to organize your tasks and make more time for yourself? We have something for YOU!

2 – Challenges Ourselves

We can achieve this in a variety of ways: physically, intellectually, mentally and even spiritually. That’s why we are setting up these new goals to push ourselves more than last year.

3 – Continue to Educate Ourselves

We’re motivated to staying on top of the newest social media trends, researching and developing our design skills, observing new ways to craft SEO ranking blog posts and asking questions when we don’t know something.

4 – We Understand Mommy Guilt (and general woman guilt)

As women, we all have the mommy guilt (mom’s will understand). I know I do! We feel bad when we work, clean, hang with friends and anything that drives our time away from kids. But for you mom entrepreneurs and even if you’re not a mom, acknowledge you have it and begin to focus on this new year and your new goals. You are enough, so give yourself some grace!

5 - We Know Healthy Doesn’t Always Mean Going To The Gym

We love working out and TRYING to eat healthy, but that’s only the physical healthiness. We know it’s important to embody healthiness in all areas of our life in this new year. So, that’s what we are setting our sights on.

6 – We are Financially Savvy

Okay, we admit we aren’t the best with this one. We want to grow in this area this coming year.  Knowing what we can spend, is crucial for running a successful small business

7 – We Smile

Take a second to smile. Tell a funny joke, read your favorite chapter in your book or listen to a comedian, whatever it will take to get a smile on your face—DO IT! Doesn’t it feel soooo good? It changes your outlook on your day, and think about smiling back at someone. That’s powerful!

8 – We Can Step Away From Our Job And Have a Life Outside Of Our Workplace

This one is hard for us. We are still figuring out this balance. Yet, when we allow ourselves to stepback from work and let our hair down, we can enjoy life and our work a whole lot more. Definitely a big goal to pursue this year.

9 – We Sets Our Goals And Methods For Keeping Track Of Them

We are setting up ourselves for success this year. We have goals and an action plan to fulfill these goals. Do you have your action plan in place? We have a FREEBIE available to help you write down your goals. Let’s do this together!

10 – We Celebrate The Wins, Both Big And Small

Crucial. We did this last year and will continue to do so. We celebrated the launch our our site. Big win. We celebrated our first social media post. Small Win. But no matter the size of the victory, we celebrate because it’s worth it.

11 – We Help Others Through Selfless Acts Of Kindness

We want to GIVE back to other small business owners or creative entrepreneurs. We want to show our support and that we care for them. Kindness can go a long way.

FUTURE

Okay, remember what we were talking about earlier? We run a boutique design business and we have had a hard time running our small business and finding a balance with our family? Well, fast-forward 8 months, and B&M Design Co is still a boutique design studio. Yay!! Casey still works full-time and I work part-time while staying home with my 10 month old daughter, and both continuing to manage B&M Design Co. Life couldn’t be anymore crazier, yet we have begun to figure out this thing called entrepreneurship. Okay, well sort of, but we do know we have awesome goals for this new year, and really excited to see what our future holds!

So, I guess the answer to our problem is, continue to do what we are doing and focus on our new goals. We wouldn’t want to change what last year brought, but we know we can do a few things better. So, here’s to another year in business. CHEERS!

Thank you to everyone who has supported us this past year! We wouldn’t be where we are without you.

Cheers to 2018,
Casey & Michelle
