Cracking 5 Myths for Creative Business Owners

Owning a creative business can be scary.

Maybe you’ve been a business owner for only one month, or maybe even 10 years. Either way, we want you to be well prepared as you take this journey as a creative entrepreneur.

We’re providing you five myths to owning a creative business, and how we can work together to bust them.

Let’s jump in!

myth #1: You’ll Be Wealthy Starting Out

Let’s all admit it. We all started up our creative businesses thinking we were going to be wealthy, right? Okay, maybe not wealthy, but we thought we’d make a lot more than we actually earned starting out.

That’s okay though, you’re not the only one.

A lot of creative businesses and entrepreneurs expect a 6-figure income in the first two months. We’re going to be real, that’s not going to be the case. You could be the exception, but it takes time to cultivate your business and really build trust with potential clients.

Once the trust is established and you’ve given your potential clients reason to book your services or buy your products, then you can begin to see the income flow in.

Remember: it takes time to generate steady income when you venture out onto your own. Give yourself time and grace along the way, and before you know it, you will be reeling in the money.

myth #2: You Have AMPLE Free Time

Ah yes. This one is good. The myth that says you’ll have so much more free time as a creative business owner.

WHAT? Do you really believe that?  Running your own business is 24/7. You may not be on your phone or email, but somehow you’re always connected to your business. Through people, thoughts, dreams, social media ect, there are plenty of other ways you’re thinking about your small business.

It’s hard to shut off.

  1. You love what you do.

  2. You love your clients.

  3. You don’t know how to shut it off, without feeling your business is going South.

We want to encourage you, find time to NOT think about your creative business to-do list. Allow time for yourself and find at least 30 minutes of free time a day to rejuvenate and just relax. This can be hard for all those go, go, go business owners out there. Try finding time. It’ll be so worth it—you’ll feel rejuvenated and ready to jump back into work!

myth #3: You’ll Have AMPLE Time To Throw Your Brand Together

This myth hits home with us. As a brand and visual identity business, we think we’ll have ample time to design and tweak our brand in-between client work. Yet, most of the time, we don’t because we continually push our brand on the back burner, not giving it the love and nourishment it needs.

Similar to what we mentioned above, creative business owners may assume they’ll have plenty of time to work on their brand in the “off-hours,” yet something always seems to be more important.

And let’s think about this.

Say you do have extra time on your hands. You decide you’ll throw your business’s brand together, because you’re creative and you’ll save money that way. Well, not entirely true. Yes, you may save actual money, but you waste your precious time doing something you only have a little knowledge on, neglecting potential clients.

So, why not leave the branding to a small business that specializes in brands and logo design—like us! That will allow you to work on the projects you are best skilled at.

myth #4: It will Be ALL Fun AND GAMES To Run A Creative Business

We’ve all heard this myth before, everyday will be fun running a your own business.

We can hear you laughing as we type. But for real, running your creative business is hard work.

Who wants to answers a full inbox of emails, or schedule their weekly social media posts or write another blog post, not knowing if anyone is even reads them in the first place!

Okay, so if you just read this, give us a shout out in the comments below! We’d love to know you’re following along on our journey.

All we’re really saying is, yes there are a lot of tasks you have to do as a business owner that are NOT fun. Yet, each strategic tasks pushes your business to cultivate and thrive. And hopefully, you allow yourself to have some fun once in awhile.

myth #5: You Can Start Your Creative Business On Your Own

This last but very important myth is really good for anyone just starting a creative business. Starting a business takes a lot time, resources, and people. Even if you’re a sole-entrepreneur, you can’t startup your business alone.

Think of all the tasks you’re not good at that may involve outsourcing or asking others for their expertise.

The list could go on and on. So, don’t get caught up with this list, but begin to make your own. Figure out where you’re lacking skill and time, then outsource tasks. This will save you a lot of tears and wasted time by freeing you up to do what you love.

Overall, don’t be overwhelmed by all the myths you need to bust or avoid as a creative business owner. Focus on why you began your small business, and then begin to work through the areas you may need coaching on or where you can ask for help.
