As a small business owner and/or creative entrepreneur, we may have one passion or we find ourselves having many passions. Instead of focusing on the one dream we want to pursue, we over-exert and stretch ourselves too thin. As business owners, we know it would be 100% better for our business and personal lives if we focused on the one passion that really drove us to become business owners, but we lose focus and site of why we even became entrepreneurs. Why do we do this to ourselves?

Let us fill you in on the secret.

A LOT of small business owners and creative entrepreneurs…

  • don’t know how to water their passions.
  • don’t know what to do to keep passionate about their dreams.
  • don’t know where to begin.
  • don’t know who to seek advice from.
  • don’t know when to take action.
  • don’t know why they continue down the same monotonous road without change.

Okay, we get it. That was a lot. You maybe thinking: wow, these are bold statements, and I don’t agree. OR maybe, you’re thinking these exact same things but need help watering your passion! We’re here to help YOU, water your passion in three easy steps!

STEP 1: Reminisce (Remember Why You Started Your Passion)

Why did you initially start your hair salon, your wedding planning business, your photography studio or your own cafe? What was the first thing that really drove you to begin your small business? Think way back, as far as you can. Gather all the reasonings you found your passion and began the journey.

Have you recalled what it is? Great. Now right it down and keep it in a safe spot. Writing down the reason why you first pursued your passion, will encourage you when times get tough and push you to succeed when you don’t feel like pushing yourself.

STEP 2: Believe You Can Do It

You must have faith and believe you can do what you set your mind to. Pursuing your passion can take a lot of effort and if you don’t trust you will succeed, you have a potential to stumble. Besides, you can’t expect people to support your passion if you don’t believe in it yourself.

Trusting in yourself will seem difficult especially as the negativity and lies set in. You’ll hear thoughts, you’re not a good enough. You’ll see competitors on social media and want to overthink everything you’ve created for your profile and business. You’ll over analyze. You’ll doubt.

However, you need to silence the negativity. There will be numerous times you feel defeated, but silencing the lies will again allow you to focus on your passion. One way we like to silence the lies that come our way is to read scripture. One of our favorites is Proverbs 3:5-6. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

STEP 3: Invest in Your Passion

So you have a passion, but have you taken the time to invest in it? Do you set achievable goals? Are you organized? Do you take the necessary steps to really pursue your passion?

Let’s explain. So, you’re starting your café* and have had this passion for awhile. You’ve dreamed of all the different espresso drinks you’ll serve, the store’s visuals and who you’ll serve. Yet, you’ve only sat on your ideas. You haven’t actually invested in your business. What should you do first? Set your core values, mission statement, long term and short term goals. Begin to take active steps to investing in your passion.

The more YOU water your passion in the beginning, the more your business will flourish down the road.

*Side Note: We visited this cute café, the Caffeinery, years ago when we were college roommates. If you’re ever in Muncie, you have to stop by and get a hazelnut latte. D-lish!
